In a place where the environment was harsh, but hearts were warm. We were served dumplings made from scratch; you could buy these as well as local pastries, in patterned paper boxes. There was something reassuring and friendly about the earthy handmade look that many items had. It spoke of the personal element that underscores every exchange, regardless of technology or time, and I want to remember that.
